Just passing through is a group of Simon's drawings and paintings made during lockdown, on display at Inside Out: Summer Window 2020 in Richmond, Surrey from 30 June – 19 July. In these works, Simon explores themes of lovers; couples and figures in a state of becoming.
My wife mourns a colleague
Simon Klein, June 2020
The desire to wail is met by her pillow
The psalms pass from grief to praise
One takes despair to chisel out a dark poetry
Languid shapes coalesce into shapes of light
Grace turns this darkness into a kind of brilliance
Happy / sad
Just passing through.
This is Simon's third exhibition at One Paved Court. Following their successful 2018 show Simon and his son the sculptor Guillaume Klein returned to the gallery in October, 2019, showcasing a range of new oil paintings, pastels and sculptures in their exhibition Structured Through Movement .
The making of their work is fostered by the movement of their tools and the process of manipulating materials. Whether in the two-dimensional or the three-dimensional, these works invite their viewers to contemplate the relationships between sculpture and movement, both figurative and abstract.

Cat, Simon's new song and animated video is the first single from his forthcoming album Will You Marry Me.
Ah at last I was just beginning to despair of finding something I liked enough to be kind to in a review when this bountiful in bounce beauty came into my email box; a song that flounces with a fine subtle rockabilly beat, the kind of song that one twists to in their kitchen whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. And did you notice I wrote song and not track for it has lyrics and melody and everything. It is a song you can both dance to and stroke your chin to: hurrah!

The paintings are worked from memory and drawings. Hand, eye and concept, they are arrived at through process. By playing with the sensuality of the human figure in imagined spaces and image, I explore touch and the visible to question my sense of the beautiful.

Some of the figure paintings I class as anti-porn, 'bottoms and faces'. The paintings show figures in a searching, and sometimes humorously sensual mood. For each figure I look for the momentary pose, static and moving, a way of being that is caught up in its own meaning and self.
